A Christmas Prologue

I composed this poem in 1995 for a senior women’s Readers Theatre ensemble I directed in Olympia.  It was intended to be read aloud by eight readers.  (Softly swaying to a waltz tempo helps provide a fuller effect!) May this reminder of the season’s gifts and sensory delights enhance your celebration!

Reindeer, and stockings and lights on the tree…

Spices, and mistletoe and hearts filled with glee…

Neighbors, and strangers, and sweet family:

Christmas is all of these, most folks would agree.

Carolers, snow scenes and presents galore…

Tinsel and garlands strung ceiling to floor…

Cookies, festivities, a Babe to adore:

Christmas means all of this

And something much more.

This is the season we reach out in hope,

When love burns more brightly

And faith helps us cope.

The magic of Christmas can soften the heart,

Can offer a dream in which all can take part.

Laughter, affection and memories so dear…

Silence, forgiveness, goodwill far and near…

Giving, receiving

And joy without fear--

Christmas is all of these:

God’s love indeed here!
